A Calvados style cider apple brandy made in the Surrey Hills. Beorc Leah is the old English name for Birtley, the location of our orchard.
Within the 48 acres of grounds of the Birtley Estate nestled in the heart of the Surrey Hills National Landscape, sits a cider apple orchard of 700 trees. The apple orchard was planted in 2012 and is managed with environmental care. We grow six varieties of cider apples which are pollinated by the honey bees from the Apiary run by Guildford Beekeepers on site and used to produce a small-batch, premium apple brandy, in the style of Calvados.
The cider produced from our 2015 harvest was matured on site and then distilled at Silent Pool Distillery in Aldbury, Surrey.
The spirit was then aged in oak barrels for four years before bottling.
The brandy is named "BEORC LEAH", the old English name for Birtley, meaning "clearing in the birch woods" and the location of our orchard. Birtley House and the Birtley Estate have records that go back in history to the 12th century and BEORC LEAH with it's beautiful bottle, smooth taste and lasting after tones reflects its rich heritage.
We are proud that BEORC LEAH won a silver medal in the 2023 London Sprits Competition and bronze at the International Wine and Spirits Competition 2025.
Birtley's award-winning, limited-edition apple brandy retails at £60 per bottle and is available to purchase at www.birtleyestate.co.uk
