Crafting Spirits and Community: The North Uist Distillery Story

Island Dreams Turned into Island Spirits

In 2019, a dream that had been nurtured for years finally became a reality as Kate and Jonny embarked on a remarkable journey. They set the stage for the North Uist Distillery, a vibrant new addition to their island home. As islanders themselves, both families had deep-rooted ties to the Outer Hebrides, deriving their livelihoods from the bounties of both land and sea. However, they harbored an aspiration to honor this rich heritage while breathing new life into their community.

The allure of their island surroundings became the wellspring of inspiration for everything at the North Uist Distillery Co. With a passion for surfing, Jonny envisioned a life where he could ride the waves whenever the swell beckoned. Meanwhile, Kate found solace in the open waters, embracing the thrill of open water swimming. Growing up on the island, they understood the significance of preserving these pristine surroundings. For them, it wasn't just about personal fulfillment; it was about creating a better life for themselves and their community. People were at the heart of their story, and their deep appreciation for the humble, hardworking island life propelled them to pursue excellence while cherishing every step of the journey.

When they assumed ownership of the brand-new distillery building at Nunton Steadings on Benbecula, they were acutely aware of its historical significance in the lives of countless islanders. They took great pride in becoming the new custodians of this legacy, determined to carry forward the tradition of island stories while weaving their own tales in the years to come. Their commitment to their craft and community shines through in their Island Dispatch email newsletter, which they send out approximately every three weeks. It's a glimpse into the stories that unfold within their distillery and the broader island life spanning North Uist, South Uist, Benbecula, and beyond.

Kate and Jonny express their heartfelt gratitude to all who have taken an interest in their distillery and joined them on this extraordinary journey. Your support means the world to them as they craft not just exceptional spirits but a flourishing community. In the spirit of the islands they call home, they raise a toast: Slàinte!
