In today’s crowded premium gin landscape, differentiation has become increasingly difficult. New craft brands launch every year, often relying on familiar botanical formulas, polished packaging, and established London Dry conventions to compete for attention.
Blackmill Distillery has taken a very different approach.
Rather than attempting to replicate classic British gin traditions, the Slovenian producer set out to create something that reflected its own culture, landscapes, and drinking rituals — a gin designed not simply for cocktails, but to be enjoyed neat, slowly, and socially, much like the traditional fruit brandies deeply embedded in Central and Eastern European drinking culture.
The result is ŽivaGin®, a distinctly Slovenian spirit that combines local botanicals, regional folklore, and an unconventional serve philosophy to create a gin positioned as both aperitif and digestif. That originality helped the brand earn a Silver Medal at the 2026 London Spirits Competition, where judges recognised its bold botanical structure and distinctive flavour profile.
For Blackmill Distillery, however, gin is only the beginning of a much larger vision — one that aims to establish Slovenia as a serious player in the global premium spirits industry.
At the heart of Blackmill’s philosophy is a belief that spirits should reflect where they come from.
Slovenia’s heavily forested landscapes, clean natural environment, and long tradition of botanical distillation provided the inspiration for ŽivaGin® from the outset. According to the distillery, juniper distillation traditions existed in the region long before modern gin became globally associated with London or the UK, with medicinal juniper spirits such as brinjevec historically embedded within Slovenian culture.
Rather than copying established gin styles, Blackmill wanted to reinterpret the category through local ingredients, local customs, and local identity.
That philosophy is reflected directly in the botanical composition of ŽivaGin®, which incorporates ingredients tied closely to Slovenia’s natural and cultural heritage. Botanicals such as birch bark, chamomile, mulberry, beeswax, and juniper create a flavour profile designed to feel both grounded in nature and unmistakably regional.
The spirit also draws inspiration from Slavic mythology, particularly the goddess Živa, whose symbolism of vitality and life influences both the branding and the sensory direction of the gin.
The surrounding landscape itself plays an important role in the brand identity. White birch forests characteristic of the White Carniola region around the distillery contribute to the visual and aromatic inspiration behind the product, while references to the indigenous Carniolan grey bee — one of the world’s most widespread honeybee strains — reinforce the gin’s strong connection to Slovenian biodiversity and agricultural heritage.
One of the clearest points of differentiation for ŽivaGin® is its intended serve ritual.
While most premium gins are positioned primarily as cocktail bases, Blackmill developed ŽivaGin® specifically to be enjoyable neat at room temperature — more akin to a fine pear brandy or eau-de-vie than a traditional gin and tonic.
The distillery describes the spirit as suitable both as an aperitif and digestif, encouraging consumers to experience the botanical complexity slowly and without dilution before experimenting with secondary serves.
Freeze-dried fruits form a key part of this approach. Raspberry is recommended not only for flavour enhancement but also for the dramatic visual transformation it creates in the glass, gradually turning the liquid pink-red while adding fruit character. Freeze-dried blueberry, meanwhile, creates vivid purple tones while leaving the flavour profile largely unchanged.
The distillery also encourages pairing the gin with herbal syrups such as elderflower, lavender, or fennel, topped with sparkling mineral water or tonic for a softer, more aromatic long drink.
For bartenders and hospitality buyers, the result is a gin that offers both versatility and theatre — a spirit with a clear point of difference in a category increasingly saturated with stylistic similarity.
Although ŽivaGin® currently serves as Blackmill’s flagship product, the distillery’s long-term ambitions extend significantly further.
The company sees itself not only as a gin producer, but as part of a broader movement to establish Slovenia within the international premium whisky and craft spirits conversation.
That ambition is reflected in the distillery’s investment into local sourcing and production infrastructure. Blackmill is actively developing plans for its own maltings operation, working with local farmers growing rye, barley, and buckwheat while also exploring the use of Slovenian Quercus Petraea oak sourced from nearby forests.
Even the distillation equipment reflects the company’s hands-on philosophy. After nearly a decade of experimentation and refinement, Blackmill has begun manufacturing its own whisky pot stills based on proprietary designs developed internally over the last ten years.
For the team behind Blackmill, every detail matters — from raw material sourcing through to still design and maturation philosophy.
The distillery openly acknowledges that building an internationally recognised spirits brand requires patience, long-term thinking, and generational commitment rather than rapid short-term growth. Visibility and reputation, they believe, are built slowly over time.
As international buyers increasingly search for authenticity, provenance, and category differentiation, Slovenia represents relatively unexplored territory within premium spirits.
That unfamiliarity creates both a challenge and an opportunity.
For Blackmill Distillery, the goal is not simply to compete within the existing craft gin market, but to introduce consumers and trade buyers to a distinctly Slovenian interpretation of botanical spirits — one rooted in local drinking traditions, regional ingredients, and cultural identity rather than international imitation.
The response so far has been encouraging. According to the distillery, local consumers have embraced ŽivaGin®, while bartenders and fine dining venues increasingly recognise its potential as a premium sipping spirit with unique serving possibilities.
Internationally, the company understands that building recognition will take time. But Blackmill is approaching that challenge with a long-term perspective grounded in craftsmanship rather than trend-driven expansion.
Ultimately, the distillery wants Blackmill and ŽivaGin® to represent something larger than a single product: a modern Slovenian spirits identity capable of standing confidently on the global stage.
And with whisky production now firmly on the horizon, Blackmill Distillery is positioning itself not merely as a craft gin producer, but as one of the emerging names helping define the future of Slovenian premium spirits.
