ShiShiZa Spirits: Redefining Coffee Liqueur Through Craft, Kaizen, and Contemporary Drinking Culture

ShiShiZa is redefining coffee liqueur through African coffee, Croatian distilling expertise and a Kaizen-inspired philosophy, creating a premium spirit designed for sipping and cocktails

The coffee liqueur category has long occupied a familiar position behind the bar. Often sweet, frequently used as a cocktail ingredient, and rarely considered a spirit worthy of standalone appreciation, the category has traditionally been defined more by utility than by craftsmanship. ShiShiZa Spirits is setting out to challenge that perception.

Founded in 2024 and officially launched in September 2025, ShiShiZa represents a new generation of premium coffee liqueurs—one that seeks to blur the boundaries between liqueur and spirit. Built on meticulous product development, international influences, and a commitment to continuous refinement, the Croatian brand is already gaining momentum across premium hospitality channels while establishing a distinctive identity in a highly competitive market.

At the heart of the brand lies a philosophy inspired by the Japanese concept of Kaizen, the principle of continuous improvement. The name ShiShiZa itself translates from Japanese as the Leo constellation, chosen as a symbol of balance, structure, strength, and courage. These values became the foundation upon which the brand was built.

The journey to launch was anything but rushed. Nearly two years of development and 14 separate recipe iterations were required before the final liquid was approved. The result is what the company describes as a “Power of Three” philosophy—a fusion of three distinct influences: the vibrant character of African coffee beans, the disciplined mindset of Kaizen, and the artisan heritage of Croatian distillation.

That international blend of inspiration is reflected throughout the product. African coffee beans are carefully selected and slow roasted to unlock fruit-forward aromatics and depth of character. These are then combined with Croatian distilling expertise and natural ingredients to create a coffee-led liqueur that intentionally moves away from the category's traditional profile.

Rather than producing another heavily sweetened coffee liqueur, the team focused on structure, balance, and drinkability. A carefully developed blend of three unrefined cane sugars and cocoa nibs helps create depth and texture without overwhelming sweetness. The objective was clear: create a liquid capable of standing confidently on its own.

The resulting profile opens with elegant aromas of fruit wrapped in praline richness before developing into layers of coffee, dark chocolate, toasted hazelnut, and smoked fig. At 21% ABV, it delivers enough structure for sipping while retaining the versatility demanded by modern hospitality operators.

This dual-purpose positioning addresses an increasingly relevant opportunity within the premium spirits market. As consumers continue to seek elevated drinking experiences, there remains relatively limited innovation in products that comfortably bridge the gap between aperitif, digestif, and cocktail ingredient. ShiShiZa was intentionally designed to occupy that space.

The brand actively encourages consumers to experience the liquid neat, chilled, or over ice. By avoiding the syrupy texture commonly associated with the category, ShiShiZa drinks more like a refined spirit than a conventional liqueur. It can serve as an elegant pre-dinner aperitif, a sophisticated after-dinner digestif, or a standalone sipping experience.

At the same time, its structure makes it highly functional behind the bar.

One of the brand's most compelling propositions for hospitality operators is what it calls the "Espresso-less Martini." Because ShiShiZa contains approximately 90mg of natural caffeine per 100ml through genuine coffee extraction, it delivers the coffee intensity typically associated with espresso-based cocktails without requiring fresh espresso. The concept is intentionally simple: combine ShiShiZa with a chosen base spirit to create a balanced coffee cocktail while reducing preparation time and operational complexity.

For bars and restaurants navigating labour pressures and service efficiency challenges, this simplicity offers practical commercial value without compromising quality.

The craftsmanship behind the liquid is supported by significant expertise. The project brings together nearly a decade of coffee industry knowledge with the experience of an internationally awarded Croatian distiller who has spent more than 15 years in the spirits industry. Produced in Zagreb using a small-batch approach, every release reflects a deliberate commitment to consistency, balance, and artisanal production.

The market has responded positively.

Since launch, ShiShiZa has secured placements in more than 25 premium hospitality venues across Croatia, including five-star hotels, Michelin-recognised restaurants, luxury bars, and carefully selected boutique retail partners. This early commercial momentum demonstrates growing demand for premium products capable of delivering both versatility and a compelling consumer story.

International recognition has followed quickly. In its first-ever international competition appearance, ShiShiZa earned a Silver Medal and 86 points at the London Spirits Competition 2026. Judges praised the spirit's rich coffee and nut aromas, smooth palate, and balanced finish featuring toffee and caramel notes.

While the award marks an important milestone, it represents only part of the company's broader ambitions. The team views the recognition as validation of the product's quality rather than the culmination of its journey.

Looking ahead, ShiShiZa's focus remains firmly on international growth, continued innovation, and expanding the possibilities of coffee-led spirits. New releases are already in development as the company explores additional ways to challenge category expectations while remaining true to its core philosophy of continuous improvement.

For importers, distributors, premium retailers, and hospitality buyers seeking products that offer genuine differentiation, ShiShiZa presents an intriguing proposition: a coffee liqueur designed not simply as a mixer, but as a premium drinking experience in its own right. Combining African coffee, Croatian craftsmanship, and Japanese-inspired precision, it is a brand seeking to redefine what coffee liqueur can be—and where it belongs in the modern drinks landscape.
