Distilleria Leonardelli: Gin Scorza and Gin Foglia Win Gold at the London Spirits Competition

Following the successes at this year’s London Spirits Competition, the owner of Distilleria Leonardelli — Enzo Leonardelli — provided his views about the competition.

The company is based in Trento, Italy, where they produce their award-winning spirits.

Distilleria Leonardelli was launched just six months ago by Enzo Leonardelli who, having spent twenty years in the hospitality sector, wanted to produce quality products that reflect his passion and experience.

Underpinning the quality proposition, the packaging is fully recyclable — the label is made of cotton, the cap is aluminum and the bottle is made using dark glass that protects the contents from oxidation.

Enzo’s passion for creating his authentic artisan spirits is clear: to create Gin Scorza 2024 he peeled 250 kilograms of organic Sicilian mandarins by hand, which is why he was so delighted to win the awards this year — a true labor of love.

The company’s distinct branding represents the Italian-Argentinian heritage of the owner and master distiller, Enzo Leonardelli; the logo is based around their family coat of arms, which has been stylishly reinvented to reinforce the company’s range of innovative, cosmopolitan, and high-quality spirits.

Enzo was aware of the London Spirits Competition and the main reason for entering this year was to have his products evaluated by a high-level, international judging panel.

As the company only started producing spirits at the end of 2023, Enzo was aware of just how important independent endorsements are: “It was important for my products to be evaluated by experts in this field. So, I thought the best way was to be judged in the home gin, England.”

Having won gold medals for the two gins that he entered, he expects that the competition will help to boost sales: “The impact was very positive and I think it will help a lot to increase sales.

“My main goal was to win at least one gold medal (we won two!) and to open up the possibility of selling in new markets around the world.”

News of the wins has been communicated across the company’s social media platforms, on their website, by email and text messages, and coverage of the successes in Italian newspapers.

Enzo was impressed with the competition, especially when compared to other events. He felt that too many competitions only consider the quality of the product, but he felt that this could lead to more commercial spirits (but not necessarily high quality) being rewarded.

Whereas, the London Spirits Competition considers three important factors when evaluating the products: “The competition rewards innovation, quality, and experimentation, but above all, it rewards the product in its entirety: the spirit, its packaging, and value for money.

“In my opinion, it is among the five best competitions in the world and is getting closer and closer to being the best competition in the world.”

Enzo hopes that the awards will help open up new markets, including England, mainland Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa, Japan, and countries where consumers are willing to pay the right price for a product that is made with natural raw materials of the highest quality.
