HEDONYA: How BBG Spirits Is Reimagining Gin for a New Generation

A Latvian producer is building a premium gin brand with global ambitions.

A premium spirits brand is rarely built on the liquid alone. It succeeds when flavour, identity, and purpose come together to create something consumers remember long after the first sip.

That philosophy sits at the heart of HEDONYA, the flagship brand of Latvia's BBG Spirits. Conceived as a modern, internationally scalable drinks brand, HEDONYA was created to offer something more expressive than traditional gin while remaining firmly committed to quality and craftsmanship. Rather than following familiar conventions, the company has set out to build a portfolio that is contemporary, flavour-led, and unmistakably distinctive.

The inspiration comes from the idea of hedonism, not in its superficial sense, but as the enjoyment of life's experiences. Food, flavour, music, creativity, culture, and shared moments all inform the brand's identity. BBG Spirits wanted HEDONYA to feel bold, sociable, slightly rebellious, and full of energy, reflecting the way many consumers engage with premium spirits today.

Gin became the natural choice for launching that vision.

Unlike many traditional spirit categories, gin offers extraordinary creative freedom. Botanical selection allows producers to shape distinctive flavour profiles while still respecting the foundations of the category. For HEDONYA, the goal was never to produce another conventional London Dry. Instead, the team deliberately softened the dominance of juniper, creating smoother, more layered expressions designed to appeal both to experienced gin drinkers and newcomers exploring premium spirits.

That philosophy begins in production.

The distillery starts with locally sourced 96.3% grain spirit, which is diluted with pure spring water before carefully selected botanicals are added for maceration. Distillation follows in a traditional pot still, with meticulous separation of the heads, heart, and tails to ensure consistency and purity. Once distilled, the spirit is gradually reduced to bottling strength using spring water before resting for approximately a week, allowing the flavours to integrate naturally. Only after quality assessment is each batch transferred for bottling, with every bottle sterilised, sealed, batch coded, and fully traceable.

The botanical recipe itself reflects extensive experimentation.

Each ingredient is first evaluated through individual trial distillations before becoming part of increasingly larger pilot batches. Only botanicals that enhance the overall balance remain in the final recipe. Among the most technically demanding ingredients are peppers, whose intensity requires exceptional precision. According to BBG Spirits, even a difference of a few grams can alter the entire flavour profile, making quality control essential throughout production.

Today, HEDONYA has evolved into a portfolio that addresses multiple drinking occasions while maintaining a consistent brand identity.

Original London Dry Gin remains the foundation, combining juniper with apple, sea buckthorn, and pepper to create a contemporary interpretation of the style. Zesty Berry London Dry Gin explores a fruit-forward direction through apples, mallow flowers, subtle pepper notes, and balanced botanicals. Umami London Dry Gin pushes further into experimentation, introducing savoury complexity inspired by the fifth basic taste and aimed at premium cocktail programmes and adventurous bartenders. Alongside the alcoholic range, HEDONYA 0% reflects the growing demand for sophisticated alcohol-free alternatives, while the company's ready-to-drink portfolio extends the brand into convenient, cocktail-inspired serves, including Grapefruit Gin & Tonic and Lychee & Basil Gin Spritz.

That commitment to innovation has already earned international recognition.

At the 2026 London Spirits Competition, HEDONYA Grapefruit Gin & Tonic Cocktail was named RTD of the Year. The company attributes the success to its emphasis on freshness, balance, and drinkability rather than excessive sweetness, combining premium gin, tonic, and vibrant pink grapefruit into an RTD designed to replicate the experience of a well-made cocktail rather than a conventional canned mixed drink.

Presentation has become another defining strength.

Retailers and bartenders have consistently praised HEDONYA's visual identity, describing the packaging as vibrant, distinctive, and highly visible on both retail shelves and back bars. To reinforce that presence in hospitality venues, BBG Spirits complements its bottles with illuminated displays and neon elements that enhance visibility and strengthen brand recognition within premium bars and nightlife environments.

The company has also incorporated practical sustainability measures into its operations.

Where possible, ingredients are sourced locally, including the high-proof grain spirit used in production. The gin bottles feature engraved glass decoration instead of traditional paper labels, reducing the use of paper and adhesives while maintaining a premium appearance. Across the RTD range, recyclable aluminium cans further support the company's efforts to minimise unnecessary packaging waste.

Building an international spirits brand from Latvia, however, presents its own challenges.

For BBG Spirits, competing against some of the world's largest drinks companies means continually demonstrating reliability, consistency, and long-term commitment to distribution partners. Logistics and transportation costs remain additional considerations as the company expands into more distant export markets.

Despite those challenges, the company's ambitions remain firmly focused.

Rather than diversifying into whisky, rum, or other spirit categories, BBG Spirits intends to deepen its expertise within gin. Plans include expanding both its flavoured gin collection and its ready-to-drink portfolio, while introducing alcohol-free RTD products that respond to changing consumer preferences. Long term, the company envisions HEDONYA Original, Zesty Berry, and its RTD range appearing in major retail chains and bars worldwide, while positioning HEDONYA Umami as a more exclusive expression reserved for leading cocktail destinations and fine hospitality venues.

Ultimately, HEDONYA is not attempting to redefine what gin is. It is asking what gin can become.

For BBG Spirits, the answer lies in balancing craftsmanship with creativity, respecting tradition while embracing innovation, and proving that premium gin can be every bit as bold, expressive, and memorable as the people who choose to drink it. In a category crowded with familiar stories, HEDONYA offers a refreshingly different perspective, one built on flavour, personality, and the confidence to stand apart.
