Agave spirits, like tequila and mezcal, are getting really popular worldwide. Tequila, made from a plant called Agave Tequilana, saw a massive increase in production in Mexico from 181.6 million to 374 million liters in recent years. With 100% Blue Agave Tequila alone shot up from 25.1 million to 228.3 million liters—that's nine times more!
Because of this, stores are thinking about offering more agave-based spirits from Mexico and other countries. In 2022, agave spirits became the second-fastest-growing category, and it's expected to be worth $1,388.1 million by 2027. Because of this growth, stores plan to give more space on their shelves to agave spirits in 2024.
Tequila is the biggest part of agave spirits and is becoming more popular globally with a 7% increase in sales each year from 2021 to 2026. People are also trying new things with agave plants, not just in Mexico but in places like Europe, China, India, Japan, and the United States.
Some brands are getting creative with agave spirits, using plants from different countries to add unique flavors and stories to their drinks. However, with all these different things on a platter,, the process of making agave spirits is quite similar for all types. They pick the agave, remove the leaves, cook the middle part (piña), crush or shred it, and then ferment and distill the juice, sometimes with crushed fibers.
People have their own ways of doing things, with different stills made from steel, copper, or even tree trunks. Cooking methods vary from big factories to brick ovens or holes in the ground. Each producer figures out their unique approach through lots of experimenting, sometimes passing down and adjusting methods over generations. This diversity is what makes Mexico's spirits so fascinating for drink enthusiasts.

According to Sid Patel, CEO of London Competitions, the increase in popularity of agave spirits in bars and competitions shows that they're becoming a big deal. The fact that more shelf space is being dedicated to these spirits also indicates a positive outlook for the agave trend in 2024.
Looking ahead to 2024, there's a chance for smaller, more sustainable producers to succeed. By supporting and investing in these types of brands, the spirits industry can help keep the quality and tradition of agave spirits alive.
To play a role in safeguarding agave-based spirits, consider the following tips: First, be adventurous and try something new by exploring different flavors and styles to broaden your palate. Second, celebrate the diversity within the world of agave spirits; there are numerous types waiting to be discovered, so give them a chance. Lastly, be mindful of your choices and spread the word – opt for brands that prioritize responsible practices in crafting their drinks, and share this valuable information with others.
Agave is a special plant because it's really good for the environment. Unlike many other plants, agave doesn't need a lot of water or harmful chemicals to grow well. It has long roots that can reach deep into the ground to find water, which is great for places with not much rain. This makes agave farming better for the environment compared to other crops.
Some brands that use agave have been doing a great job in being responsible and eco-friendly. They've won awards globally for their commitment to taking care of the planet. Some of these award-winning brands include those recognized by the London Spirits Competitions.
