For George and Stephanie, the co-founders of Clarity Distilling Company, "clarity" is more than a brand. It is the principle behind every decision they make. From the ingredients they source to the way they distil individual botanicals, the objective has always been simple: create spirits whose quality is as transparent as their origins. Founded in 2022, the New Zealand distillery was born from a shared passion for producing spirits defined by purity, vibrancy, and uncompromising flavour rather than unnecessary complexity.
Rather than using conventional grain, molasses, or cane-derived neutral alcohol, Clarity starts with a high-purity ethanol produced from whey, a natural by-product of New Zealand's grass-fed dairy industry. The spirit is among the highest commercially available at 96.2% ABV and provides what the founders believe is an exceptionally clean foundation upon which the botanicals can express themselves without interference.

Many gin producers macerate and distil their botanicals together. Clarity takes a more meticulous approach. Every botanical is distilled separately, either through direct distillation or vapour infusion, allowing its individual character to be preserved before blending begins. Only after each botanical has been assessed on its own merits are the distillates carefully layered together to create the final gin.
It is a slower and more technically demanding process, but one that gives the distilling team remarkable control over flavour, balance, and consistency. Science and creativity meet during the blending stage, where individual botanical expressions are combined into the finished spirit.

Clarity Dry Gin serves as the company's classic London Dry expression, balancing juniper with citrus, coriander, peppercorn, cardamom, cassia, liquorice root, and orris. Clarity Navy Gin pays tribute to the historic Royal Navy style, bottled at traditional Navy Strength while delivering pronounced pine, resin, citrus, and pepper notes. More recently, Clarity Sundrop Gin has expanded the range with a brighter profile built around damson plum, hibiscus, Sichuan pepper, cassia, and warming spices. Alongside the gin collection, Clarity has also developed a vodka that reflects the same philosophy of purity and precision.
At the 2026 London Spirits Competition, Clarity Navy Gin emerged as one of the standout spirits of the entire competition. It received a Double Gold Medal with 98 points, while also being named Gin of the Year and Spirit of the Year – New Zealand. Judges described a bold, oily gin layered with pine, resin, juniper, citrus, and a long peppery finish, recognising both its technical quality and commercial appeal.

Clarity Dry Gin added a Silver Medal with 89 points, reflecting the consistency of the distillery's production across multiple categories.

In 2025, Clarity Navy Gin was awarded Spirit of the Year – New Zealand at the London Spirits Competition with 98 points, while Clarity Dry Gin and Clarity 2023 Gin also earned medals. The previous year, Clarity 2023 Gin had achieved a Gold Medal, 94 points, and Best in Show by Country at the 2024 London Spirits Competition, signalling the arrival of a distillery capable of competing with established international producers despite its relatively recent founding.
These accolades reflect not simply the quality of a single flagship product but the consistency of a production philosophy applied across the entire portfolio.
The company continues to emphasise transparency at every stage of production, encouraging consumers to understand not only what they are drinking but how it is made. That openness is reflected in the brand's educational content, detailed explanations of its distillation methods, and even its Gin Blending Kit, which allows enthusiasts to experiment with individually distilled botanicals and better understand the art of flavour construction.

Consumers increasingly seek provenance, authenticity, and production methods they can understand. Rather than relying solely on marketing narratives, they want brands that demonstrate craftsmanship through measurable decisions, ingredient sourcing, production techniques, and consistency in the bottle.
By combining New Zealand ingredients, individually distilled botanicals, and an uncompromising approach to blending, the distillery has established a distinctive position within an increasingly competitive gin category. Its remarkable success at consecutive London Spirits Competitions suggests that this philosophy resonates not only with consumers but also with the buyers, bartenders, and spirits professionals who evaluate the world's finest spirits.
Clarity's greatest innovation may not be found in a single botanical or production technique. It lies in its belief that exceptional spirits should never hide behind mystery.
Instead, they should speak for themselves with complete clarity.
