The phrase "small batch" appears on countless bottles today. At Lume Distilling, it is not a marketing slogan. It is a production philosophy.
Every batch of Lume Gin is limited to just 100 bottles, an intentionally modest scale that allows the Sydney-based distillery to maintain close control over every stage of production. Triple distilled and handcrafted using premium botanicals, the company's gins reflect a belief that consistency, precision, and attention to detail matter more than volume. It is an approach that has helped a young Australian producer attract international recognition in some of the spirits industry's most respected competitions.
Lume Distilling was founded by Aloke, Jay, Kinjal, and Ammit, who set out to build a boutique gin brand centred on craftsmanship rather than mass production. Leading the distillery's production is Head Distiller Cal Paterson, whose focus has been on creating gins that are equally suited to sipping neat and performing behind the bar in contemporary cocktails.

Australia has developed one of the world's most dynamic craft gin scenes over the past decade, with producers increasingly experimenting with native botanicals and regional flavour profiles. Within that landscape, Lume has positioned itself around meticulous production, premium ingredients, and deliberately limited releases that emphasise quality over scale. Every bottle is produced through triple distillation, creating a spirit that the distillery describes as smooth while retaining the bold botanical character expected of a contemporary premium gin.
At the 2025 Bartender Spirits Awards, Lume Botanical Gin was awarded a Gold Medal, earning 91 points from a judging panel composed entirely of U.S. bartenders, bar managers, and beverage directors. The judges highlighted the gin's balance of soft juniper and cardamom alongside citrus and bay leaf aromatics, noting a plush, structured palate and a clean, spice-driven finish. Recognition from hospitality professionals carries particular significance, as the competition evaluates spirits specifically for their performance in bars and restaurants rather than through purely technical tasting.

At the 2026 London Spirits Competition, Lume Botanical Gin earned a Gold Medal, further validating the distillery's focus on craftsmanship and commercial appeal. Unlike traditional blind-tasting competitions, the London Spirits Competition evaluates entries across three equally important dimensions: quality, value, and packaging, reflecting the considerations buyers make when selecting products for retail and hospitality. For a boutique producer competing alongside established international brands, success in this format demonstrated that Lume's appeal extends beyond the glass alone.

Following its Bartender Spirits Awards success, Head Distiller Cal Paterson described the recognition as validation that the distillery's commitment to quality resonates not only in Australia but also with influential hospitality professionals in one of the world's most competitive drinks markets. For a producer seeking international growth, endorsement from bartenders offers a particularly meaningful benchmark, as these professionals ultimately influence many of the spirits consumers encounter in bars and restaurants.
Rather than expanding production aggressively, Lume has maintained its emphasis on small-scale distillation, believing that exclusivity and consistency reinforce one another. Producing only 100 bottles per batch allows the team to monitor every stage of production closely while preserving the handcrafted identity that distinguishes the brand.
Lume Botanical Gin combines classic gin botanicals with carefully selected complementary ingredients to create a spirit that remains recognisably London Dry in structure while offering additional aromatic complexity. The result is a gin equally comfortable in a Martini, a Gin & Tonic, or more contemporary cocktails where balance and botanical definition are essential.
The name "Lume" itself evokes light, an idea that aligns naturally with the distillery's approach to gin. Rather than overwhelming the palate with intensity, the emphasis is on clarity, precision, and elegance. Every decision, from botanical selection to triple distillation and limited production, reflects that objective.
In an increasingly crowded premium gin category, many brands compete by becoming louder.

It relies on craftsmanship rather than spectacle, consistency rather than scale, and careful distillation rather than novelty. International recognition at both the Bartender Spirits Awards and the London Spirits Competition suggests that this quieter approach is resonating with the very people who matter most: the bartenders, buyers, and trade professionals responsible for introducing new spirits to consumers.
For a distillery that produces only 100 bottles at a time, that is an impressive reach.
Lume Distilling demonstrates that building a globally recognised gin brand does not necessarily require producing more. Sometimes, it simply requires making every bottle count.
