With a surge in unique small-batch, artisanal gins, the AlcoBev market has seen some truly fascinating infusions and flavour profiles when it comes to gin. But Florum Tulipa Gin, the flagship spirit from Florum Flowers Beverages, isn’t just about delicate floral notes—it’s about heritage, innovation, and an ode to the Netherlands’ most iconic bloom: the tulip.
Crafted in Schiedam, the historic gin capital of the world, and distilled using organically grown Dutch tulip petals, this small-batch spirit has just clinched Gold at the 2025 London Spirits Competition, scoring 95 points. For founder John Smit, this recognition isn’t just a win—it’s a powerful affirmation.
“It’s a true honour to receive a gold award for this authentically Dutch, high-quality gin,” Smith says. “From the very beginning, the foundation of this gin was clear: organically grown tulip petals. They served as the heart of the recipe from which everything else was built.”
The idea of distilling tulip flowers may sound whimsical, but for Smit, it was a natural extension of his own story. With over two decades in the flower bulb industry and deep ties to Dutch agriculture, the inspiration was sitting in the soil all along. “We wanted to create a gin where every element aligned—ingredients, Dutch heritage, visual identity, flavour, and packaging. The tulip isn’t just a symbol; it’s an experience we’ve captured in a bottle.”
Florum Tulipa Gin is built around the flavour profile of the biologic tulip petals, resulting in an earthy, floral character that’s distinctly different from traditional London Dry or citrus-forward gins. Even the delicate hue of the gin is a nod to its natural origins—no artificial colouring, just the pigments found in the tulip itself.
Where many gins rely on the tried-and-tested combination of juniper, coriander, and citrus peels, Florum veers in an entirely new direction—one that’s guided by floral finesse and botanical storytelling. It’s a gin that feels right at home in a springtime G&T or a garden-party cocktail, but it also stands confidently on its own.
“As a gin enthusiast, I’ve always preferred gins with floral and fresh notes. I wanted something that would be refreshing, elegant, and versatile—especially in the warmer months,” Smit shares.
That careful balance of innovation and drinkability is part of what caught the attention of judges at the London Spirits Competition. It’s not just a niche novelty—it’s a gin with serious structure, quality, and staying power.
As for the future, Smit is only just beginning. With growing global interest and a newly minted gold medal to his name, Florum Flowers is now laying the groundwork for expansion—and perhaps, future floral explorations.
“Winning this award gives us the confidence and momentum to share our story more broadly. We’re looking forward to building on this, reaching new markets, and maybe even crafting a new expression rooted in another piece of Dutch terroir.”
For those seeking a gin that delivers more than just botanicals—for those who want a taste of Dutch spring in every pour—Florum Tulipa Gin is a spirit in full bloom. Elegant, earthy, and unmistakably original, it invites drinkers not just to sip, but to wander—through tulip fields, through tradition, and into something beautifully unexpected.
