Cornwall has always been a place where stories run as deep as the ground beneath it.
For centuries, the county's identity was shaped by tin miners whose lives revolved around hard work, resilience, and close-knit communities. Those traditions remain woven into Cornwall's cultural landscape long after the mines themselves have fallen silent.
Created by Southwestern Distillery, the independent Cornish producer behind Tarquin's Cornish Gin and Twin Fin Rum, the brand reimagines local mining folklore through a contemporary whisky identity. Rather than recreating historical spirits, Tinner Bros builds an entirely new narrative around two legendary Cornish brothers who, according to the brand's story, spent their days mining tin and their nights distilling whisky in secret. The tale may be legendary, but the values it represents, determination, craftsmanship, and a refusal to follow convention, closely mirror the philosophy behind the whisky itself.
Southwestern Distillery was founded in 2013 by Tarquin Leadbetter, who left a career in London to establish Cornwall's first distillery in more than a century. What began as a small craft gin operation has grown into one of the United Kingdom's best-known independent spirits producers, with a portfolio spanning gin, rum, vodka, and now whisky. Throughout that journey, the company has remained family-owned and independent, continuing to produce spirits from its headquarters at Higher Trevibban Farm near Padstow on Cornwall's north coast.

Rather than competing directly with established Scotch or world whisky producers, the brand has developed its own identity, one that is intentionally less formal and more approachable. Its message is refreshingly direct: "No fancy glasses required. No pretentious rituals allowed. No permission needed." The emphasis is on enjoying whisky without unnecessary ceremony, encouraging consumers to explore serves ranging from classic Old Fashioneds to simple whisky and cola combinations.
Produced from 100% bourbon whisky before being finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks and ex-honey bourbon barrels, the whisky balances rich fruit with sweetness and spice. According to the distillery, the combination creates a spirit layered with sherry richness while retaining a smooth, approachable character inspired by Cornwall's rugged coastline and independent spirit.
At the 2026 London Spirits Competition, Tinner Bros Miner's Reserve Whisky received a Gold Medal with 91 points. Judged by an international panel of bartenders, buyers, and spirits professionals, the competition evaluates entries for quality, value, and packaging, recognising products with genuine commercial appeal as well as excellence in the glass.

The judges described a whisky offering aromas of dark cherry, plum, and candied fruit supported by vanilla, leading to a rich palate with a smooth texture and balanced sweetness before a medium-length finish. Those tasting notes reflect the influence of the finishing casks while highlighting a style designed to be both approachable and flavourful.
For Southwestern Distillery, the award represents another milestone in a journey that has consistently been recognised on the international stage.
The company first attracted widespread attention through Tarquin's Cornish Gin, which established Cornwall as an important destination for premium craft spirits. Since then, the distillery has expanded its portfolio to include Twin Fin Rum, Connie Glaze Vodka, and Tinner Bros Whisky, demonstrating a willingness to innovate while remaining closely connected to its Cornish roots. Previous success at the London Spirits Competition with Tarquin's and Twin Fin has reinforced the company's reputation for producing spirits that combine craftsmanship with strong commercial appeal.

Many spirits brands borrow history as a marketing device. Tinner Bros builds its identity around a fictional legend that celebrates the real people and industries that shaped Cornwall. Mining is not simply decorative branding. It becomes a metaphor for perseverance, hard graft, and finding light in difficult places, themes reflected in the brand's guiding line: "From the darkness came light."
Rather than positioning itself as a spirit reserved for collectors or connoisseurs, Tinner Bros invites drinkers to enjoy whisky in whichever way suits them best. Whether served neat, over ice, or in contemporary cocktails, the brand deliberately removes many of the conventions that can make whisky appear intimidating to new consumers.
As whisky continues to attract younger drinkers and more diverse audiences, brands that combine authenticity with accessibility are finding new opportunities to grow. Consumers still value craftsmanship, but they are equally interested in brands with personality, confidence, and a genuine sense of place.

It draws inspiration from Cornwall's industrial past without becoming trapped by it. It celebrates local identity while presenting whisky in a contemporary, approachable way. And it demonstrates that compelling storytelling, when supported by quality in the bottle, can create a brand that resonates with both consumers and industry professionals.
For Southwestern Distillery, Tinner Bros is more than another addition to an already successful portfolio.
It is proof that Cornwall's stories are still being written, one dram at a time.
