Denmark’s Top Scoring Spirits of 2020

Check out Denmark’s top-scoring and high-quality spirits at the 2020 London Spirits Competition.

Apart from its high-quality design & architecture, contemporary culture, Denmark Hygge, Lego & Colorful Crooked Houses - Denmark is also famous for brewing and distilling delicious beverages, and it deserves more attention in a world growing smaller by the day.

Here we bring you a list of seven spirits from Denmark that you ought to try this 2020.

  1. Fary Lochan Danish Single Malt

Fary Lochan Danish Single Malt by Fary Lochan Destilleri A/S comes with 48.3% ABV. On the nose, this single malt whiskey has notes of freshly cut grass and vanilla. Then caramel, spices, and an almost non-existent smoke. The smoke appears very little after standing for a few minutes.

On the palate, Fary Lochan Danish Single Malt is oily, full-bodied, dry, and dries out the mouth due to the Oloroso dish. Vanilla and spices are most dominant in the taste. After standing for 10 minutes, this whiskey also tastes like a sweetish creme brulee.

In Fary Lochan Danish Single Malt, alcohol percentage and taste goes well together. The aftertaste is long and the flavors stay in the mouth for a long time. Here it is mostly the spices that are at stake.

Fary Lochan Danish Single Malt won a Gold medal along with “Best In Show By Country,” and “Best Spirit By Quality” at the London Spirits Competition held on July 8, 2020.

  1. 2019 Stauning Rye

2019 Stauning Rye by Stauning Whisky A/S is a true classic, and the first official whiskey to be released from Stauning Whisky. The production methods have been refined since they launched their first batch, but the traditions remain as it is. It is a straight rye whiskey since it contains no artificial flavor or coloring and it has been matured between 3 to 4 years.

The rye and barley base makes 2019 Stauning Rye the perfect companion to Danish rye bread. Stauning Rye is basically the liquid form of rye bread. You can try 2019 Stauning Rye as a substitute for snaps or aquavit or use it in your preferred whiskey cocktail - a Manhattan or an Old Fashioned could be great choices.

2019 Stauning Rye contains only floor malted rye and floor-malted barley. This makes it very special in the world of whiskey. At Stauning Whisky, the team does all processes on-site, and it means that they can handle the malting of the rye.

2019 Stauning Rye is warm, friendly, and fresh. At the same time, it is also spicy, bold, and full-bodied. This whiskey seems considerably older than the age suggests. One can clearly taste the Rye and recognize the scent of freshly baked rye bread.

Stauning Rye won a Silver medal at the London Spirits Competition held on July 8, 2020.

  1. Botanic Vodka

Botanic Vodka by AMASS comes with 40% ABV. Distilled in Copenhagen, AMASS Vodka with Marigold, Chamomile, and Lemon celebrates Nordic distilling tradition and the rich, vibrant history of Scandinavian drinking culture. Introducing an unconventional production method, botanicals are carefully distilled on an Aquavit still to create a heart with subtle layers of flowers folded around fresh, hand-grated citrus. Inspired by the city’s long summer evenings and long winter nights, the result is a light, elegant spirit that pays tribute to Nordic drinking tradition, perfectly suited for a variety of cocktails and seasons.

On the nose, Botanic Vodka has citrusy aromas of warm lemon drop candy which turns into hay and sweet tea, before fading to frost and cold iron. On the palate, this vodka first tastes like bitter lemon and then gives you grassy notes of dry summer and iced tea. On the finish, Botanic Vodka has more hay and wildflowers mouthfeel, and then finally cereal and grainy sweetness.

Botanic Vodka won a Silver medal at the London Spirits Competition held on July 8, 2020.
